Jurgen Klopp’s assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has been confirmed as the new manager of Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in a move which sees him leave Liverpool after nearly a decade working with the club.

Lijinders joined Liverpool in 2014 and assisted Brendan Rodgers in his final year at Anfield before teaming up with Klopp after his arrival from Borussia Dortmund.

The 41-year-old was heavily praised for Liverpool’s progress during the early years of Klopp’s tenure and made the decision to go solo in January 2018 when he became manager of second-tier Dutch side NEC. He was sacked just six months later after failing to win promotion via the play-offs and immediately returned as Reds assistant manager as they lifted the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League a year later.

Lijnders has remained Klopp’s right hand man since then, but will now once again move on to pastures new as he aims to forge his own career as a manager. The Dutchman has signed a three-year contact with the Austrian side and will be joined by Liverpool development coach Vitor Matos as part of the deal.

This summer marks the start of a new era behind the scenes at Old Trafford as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS spearhead the club’s transfer operations.

Ratcliffe has spoken of his desire to knock Manchester City and Liverpool off their perch and reports claim that he is determined to kick off his reign with a statement signing.

Mail Sport understands that the Red Devils are preparing a £55m move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

The Toffees’ stance so far has been that the 21-year-old is not for sale. However, recent financial difficulties compounded with the uncertainty surrounding their takeover could mean that the club sacrifices one of their key assets to balance the books.

Branthwaite, who can play all across the back four, has won plaudits for his consistent displays in recent months and even earned himself a first ever England call-up.
