Championship team of the week dominated by Birmingham City, Sunderland, Preston North End and QPR - gallery

Here’s how the EFL Championship team of the week shapes up for the weekend of September 2, 2023.

Five weekends have now been and gone with the start of the EFL Championship season very much underway for all 24 teams up and down the country.

An international break has arrived to break up the momentum somewhat but the likes of Preston North End, Ipswich Town, Leicester City and Birmingham City have already filled the top four spots.

Swansea City, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough, on the other hand, are the only sides without a win and they’re therefore struggling down in the bottom three.

Focusing on the weekend just gone, Sunderland were without doubt the standout club as they stunned newly-relegated Southampton with a 5-0 thrashing at the Stadium of Light.

Meanwhile, Queens Park Rangers, Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town soared away from the relegation zone as they earned wins at Middlesbrough, Norwich City and West Bromwich Albion.

So many players impressed on September 2 that it would be tricky to select just 11 to form a team of the week, but thankfully WhoScored’s rating system helps in that case.

With that in mind, flick through the pages to see the best players in their respective positions from the fifth weekend of 2023/24 Championship action.
