Birmingham City already appear to have lined up Wayne Rooney as John Eustace’s replacement after their surprise sacking decision.

Birmingham City are reportedly set to triple their managerial pay packet after making the surprise decision to sack John Eustace.Eustace had enjoyed a pretty successful time in charge of the club, stabilising them last season with a 17th place finish before enjoying an impressive start to this campaign, with Blues currently sat in sixth place.

Despite those efforts, he was sacked by Birmingham, who say the new manager will be responsible for ‘creating an identity and clear ‘no fear’ playing style that all Birmingham City teams will adopt and embrace.’

The decision appears to have come about because of a development Stateside, with Wayne Rooney relieved from his role as DC United boss after missing out on the MLS playoffs.

The Sun say Rooney has already been told the Blues job is his if he wants it, and the Midlands club are also said to be willing to pay the Manchester United legend a significant wage, rubbing salt in the wounds of Eustace.

It’s claimed Eustace was being paid £9,000 per week, while Rooney will be offered a wage of around £29,000, up from his £23,653 per week DC United wage. That’s despite Rooney struggling to prove himself during his managerial career so far. The 37-year-old couldn’t save Derby County from relegation from the Championship, although financial circumstances did dictate, and he failed to secure a playoff spot in back-to-back years with DC United.

The move is likely related to the American portion of the Blues ownership, with Rooney an obvious marketing point even more than two years after his playing career concluded. In a hint at why Eustace was sacked, the club statement read: “It is essential that the Board of Directors and the football management are fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire Football Club.”
