Troy Deeney has revealed what Radamel Falcao said to him following Birmingham City’s final pre-season fixture against Rayo Vallecano last weekend.

The Blues played out a 2-2 draw with the Spanish outfit to round off their summer schedule and Deeney was able to grab the former Atletico Madrid and Monaco man for a chat after the final whistle.

Falcao told the Blues captain that he was impressed with what he had seen from them, claiming that they ‘were a good outfit.’

“I spoke to Falcao after the game on Saturday and he said that we are a good outfit,” explained Deeney.

“That’s the biggest compliment we can take, when somebody from another team of that stature says it. It’s good. Anybody who watched the game knows we should have won.”

The boyhood bluenose also revealed that Falcao has inadvertently been helping off of the field, too.

Deeney has been spending a lot of this pre-season mentoring the younger members of the squad and has just this week been sat down with Sam Cosgrove watching tape of the Colombian from Saturday’s game in a bid to improve elements of Cosgrove’s game.

“It’s about learning things,” he said.

“We got some of his movement clipped up and went through it with Sam Cosgrove, because that’s a world class striker. He’s always sitting on the back of the defender. Little things that strikers should do.

“At this point in my career, not only been fit enough to contribute on the pitch, it’s about off the pitch, sitting and talking with players and showing them tricks of the trade. It was a good game.

“I think pre-season has been perfect with the types of games we’ve played. It’s been enjoyable. I just want to get started.”

Blues take on Luton Town this Saturday at Kenilworth Road in the Championship opener.
