Birmingham City have been linked with a move for Iceland international right-back Alfons Sampsted.

Blues are keen to bring in a new right-back and are considering a bid for Sampsted, with talks already underway. Ethan Laird is a terrific option among the current crop but Chris Davies wants depth in all areas to not only help the promotion chances but also to provide future-proofing.

Icelandic outlet Fotbolti.net reports Sampsted is “looking around” for a new club as he’s considering departing Twente. Blues are said to have opened talks with the Dutch club over a potential transfer, though no official proposal has been sent as it stands.

Birmingham, if they go ahead with an offer, could ask new signing Willum Willumsson to put in a good word as he’s an international teammate of Sampsted. The pair, both the same age, have a good friendship and could build up a decent partnership at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

Sampsted, who has 21 senior caps for Iceland since making his debut in January 2020, made 29 appearances in all competitions for Twente last season. Game time during the 2022/23 campaign was far less inconsistent but he’s finally made his mark as a regular starter.

Before joining Twente, Sampsted played 134 times for Norwegian top-flight club Bodo/Glimt, where he racked up six appearances in the Europa League and 12 in the Europa Conference League. The 26-year-old could theoretically be another very astute signing for Birmingham, but talks remain at an initial stage.

Blues are now just one day away from their first game of the highly-anticipated 2024/25 League One campaign. Davies’ men play host to Reading on Saturday late afternoon.
