25 soon-to-be free agents available to Birmingham City - including Sheffield United pair - transfer gallery
With the summer transfer window approaching, Birmingham City will be keeping an eye on the free agents market - and these 25 names are set to be available.
Birmingham City had their best season in six years as they hit the 53-point mark and comfortably survived relegation to League One by achieving a 17th-placed finish in the Sky Bet Championship.
The campaign may have ended with three successive defeats but there was a party atmosphere at St Andrew’s on the final day after it was announced Tom Wagner and Shelby Companies Limited had agreed a takeover of the club.
Supporters had been protesting all campaign long for a switch over in ownership and it now seems they will get just that. An exciting summer awaits as Blues look to rebuild their squad for next term.
Birmingham are still unlikely to have the financial backing of teams near the top of the table, but they will definitely have more freedom than they did throughout 2022/23.
The free agents market could be highly beneficial as it’s a cheap and efficient way of bringing in new players. Kevin Long was a fine example as he did brilliantly to form a nice partnership with Marc Roberts in defence.
It’s likely that John Eustace and company will be keeping a close eye on players across the division leaving clubs at the end of their current deals, with a few pickups possible.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at 24 players in the Championship set to become free agents at the end of June, as well as one Manchester United player who could be a realistic coup.

1. Sam Byram (Norwich City)
Once a player dubbed to have a sky-high ceiling, the 29-year-old’s career has dwindled somewhat. He still has plenty to offer, though and could be an exciting addition at right-back for Blues. Would finally give Maxime Colin the chance to be rotated if he were to stay.

2. Callum Elder (Hull City)
Formerly of Leicester City, the Australian will definitely be leaving Hull this summer as the club confirmed the decision to part ways with their left-back. Blues could really do with another permanent addition in that position as Auston Trusty won’t be coming back for a second loan.

3. Sam Clucas (Stoke City)
The man who one made a huge £16 million move to Swansea City, it seems as if Clucas’ days at Stoke are numbered. Played just 12 times in 2022/23 but could be a good utility option for Blues as he can play anywhere in midfield, or even at left-back.

4. Robbie Brady (Preston North End)
Didn’t score a single goal for Preston in 2022/23 but took on more of a creative role, contributing six assists in 34 Championship games. Played just 51% of the minutes available to him, though, and might consider leaving to become a regular starter elsewhere.
