Birmingham City have the chance to still sign players - even though the January transfer window is over

Birmingham City ended up having a busy January transfer window. The Blues are now stuck with what they have got until the summer at least - unless they opted to delve into the free agent market.

Chris Davies’ side are top of the League One table as they eye promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking. They won 2-1 at home to Rotherham United last time out and came from 1-0 down to seal all three points.

Birmingham were relegated from the second tier last year after finishing in the bottom three along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town. They have the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham chasing them down right now. Here is a look at some free agents who they could target...

Free agent defenders

Daniel Amartey, who won the Premier League title and the FA Cup during his days at Leicester City, is available. He cut ties with Besiktas in September and remains without a new home. Meanwhile, former Manchester United full-back Brandon Williams remains unattached and free to join someone for nothing.

Crystal Palace released Nathan Ferguson at the end of last season after his contract expired. He rose up through the academy ranks of Birmingham’s rivals West Brom before moving down south to London.

Meanwhile, former Fulham right-back Ryan Fredericks is unattached after parting ways with AFC Bournemouth. The 32-year-old has played 250 games in his career to date.

Free agent midfielders

Dru Yearwood was on the books at Brentford before New York Red Bulls lured him over to the USA. The midfielder has recently left Nashville and will be weighing up his next move.

It is a surprise to see Ovia Ejaria hasn’t been fixed up with a new team yet. He departed Reading in 2023 and hasn’t put pen-to-paper with anyone as of yet. Meanwhile, Jeff Hendrick is another who is free having last featured for Newcastle United.

Stefan Johansen is a vastly experienced operator in the English Football League. Formerly of Fulham, West Brom and QPR, he has recently left Sarpsborg 08 in his native Norway.

Free agent attackers

Teams up and down the country, including Birmingham, can still bring in some more firepower at the top end of the pitch if needed. Ryan Kent saw his deal at Fenerbahce mutually terminated late last year and hasn’t joined anyone new yet.

Johnny Russell has spent the last seven years in MLS after leaving Derby County in 2018. He was a hit at Sporting Kansas City and fired 43 goals in 132 matches. Kemar Roofe was on the books at West Brom as a youngster before embarking on spells at Oxford United and Leeds United. Rangers opted against keeping him last year and he remains available.

Lucas Joao played for Sheffield Wednesday from 2015 to 2019 and was a key player for the Owls. He found the net on 29 occasions in 127 outings during his days in South Yorkshire and also had a loan spell away at Blackburn Rovers before heading abroad.
