So, you’re saying there’s a chance? - Riley McGree on a future with Blues post January

The midfielder is currently due to fly back to Charlotte FC in January

Birmingham City midfielder Riley McGree is due to return to his parent club, Charlotte FC of the MLS in January and although the decision may be taken out of his hands - the 23-year-old refused to rule out a return to Blues.

Since forcing his way into the squad at the end of October, McGree has become an ever-present for Lee Bowyer. He’s started every game since the 0-0 draw with Huddersfield Town and become arguably the most reliable performer within the side.

With two goals in that time as well as 10 key passes & 10 chances created among various other positive statistics, he’s become quite a valuable asset.

Keeping him around, if possible, would in itself result in a perfect winter transfer window for most.

Bowyer has recently stated that McGree ‘definitely goes back’ when his contract expires on January 1 but speaking after the 1-0 victory over Blackpool on Saturday - the Australian simply let it be said that “time will tell.”

So, you’re saying there’s a chance?

“I think it is what it is at the moment, I’m going to give my 100% week in week out, game in game out for Birmingham,” McGree explained.

“I love playing for the club, I love this club and as I said no matter where I’m playing or what I’m doing I’m going to give 100% for this club.

“I love English football, growing up as a youngster in Australia this is ultimately where you want to have a long and good career. Time will tell, we’ll see what happens.

“Who knows, honestly who knows. At the moment my contract situation is that I go back in January with Charlotte. If that changes, I’m sure everyone will find out.

“Honestly, I don’t know. Time will tell. As I said, contractually right now my plan is to go back in January but I’m just focusing game in game out here at Birmingham and whatever happens, happens.

“I want to play week in week out wherever I am and as I said I will give 100% for this club no matter where I’m playing or what club I’m at, I’ll give 100% - I just love playing football.”

The midfielder later joked that he would love for the media to stop asking him but we all knew deep down it’s because he’d love nothing more than to say that he can stay.

His smile said it all.
