'We need to change...' - Birmingham City given warning by League One rival
Birmingham City's next League One opponents have made a change in the dugout but Blues will be hoping for no new manager bounce.
Birmingham City have been warned that they will face a Shrewsbury Town with a fresh new outlook following the appointment of Gareth Ainsworth.
Blues’ next opponents are Shrewsbury who have changed their manager following a poor start to the season. The Shrews have lost 11 out of their 15 league matches, and find themselves six points adrift of safety.
Paul Hurst was relieved of his duties after one win in their past 12 games in all competitions. Ainsworth, who was last in management with QPR in October 2023 has taken over, and is confident he can turn the Shropshire sides’ form around.
The players will return to work on Monday as the international break comes to an end, and Ainsworth will be tasked with changing the mindset of his players. Their first task is to overcome Birmingham, who are 22 points better off.
“I want to tell them that from Monday this place is going to change,” said Ainsworth to the Shropshire Star at his unveiling.
“There are some bright sparks, and talent, in the squad. There are definitely some positives in there, but there are a lot of negatives as well - which we need to change.
“We need to change the mindset, the way they think and the way they are going about it. We can get out of this, without a shadow of a doubt. I would not be sat here, if I believed I was coming here to take a team into League Two. I am keeping a team in League One and I will be telling every player that's the aim."
If Shrewsbury are to get up and running against Birmingham then they will have to do something that only Charlton Athletic have done in the league, and that's beat them. Shrewsbury’s only home win of campaign came at the end of August when they beat Leyton Orient.
Birmingham and Shrewsbury have already clashed this season having met in the EFL Trophy. It was a comfortable win for Chris Davies' side as Scott Wright scored a first-half brace with Tomoki Iwata and Emil Hansson also on target.
