The former Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City midfielder has emerged as a potential candidate for a job that was made recent vacant.

Former Birmingham City midfielder Robbie Savage is reportedly under consideration for a vacancy in League One.

Northampton Town are on the lookout for a new first-team manager after they announced the departure of Jon Brady. Brady tendered his resignation after losing to Stevenage in midweek with the Cobblers currently fourth from bottom and in the relegation zone.

Football Insider is reporting that Northampton have been 'very impressed' by the job Savage has done at Macclesfield. He took over as head coach at the Silkmen having previously been their director of football.

Macclesfield is Savage's first job in management, and so far he has his side top of the Northern League Premier Division which is the seventh tier of English football, one division below the National League North.

His side have 50 points from a possible 57, having tasted just one defeat in 19 games. Macclesfield sit a whole 15 points above Worksop Town. Their league campaign is currently on pause as they travel to Altrincham in the third round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

If Northampton were to act on their interest then unfortunately he would not be making a return to St Andrew’s. The two sides met at the start of November and played to a 1-1 draw.

Birmingham are next due to play Northampton in March. Whether it’s Savage or someone else, the next manager will have had plenty of time in charge before they face one of the league favourites again.

Savage's association with Birmingham spanned two-and-a-half-years after he joined from Leicester City for a fee of £1.25m. He made 88 appearances for Blues and scored 12 goals. He departed for Blackburn Rovers in 2005 to reunite with former Wales boss MArk Hughes, and later played for Derby County and Brighton & Hove Albion.
