Birmingham City goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has taken to social media to provide a positive update on the nasty looking head injury he suffered during the 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The Philippine international collided with Forest’s Djed Spence just after the hour mark and was knocked out cold following the impact.

There was no maliciousness from the Forest man with Lee Bowyer describing the incident as ‘two players committed going for the ball’ but the outcome could have been far more severe than it ultimately turned out for Etheridge.

Birmingham City’s official pages provided an update late on Saturday evening saying, ‘thankfully, CT scans revealed no injury to the bones in the head but considerable swelling to the right side of the face which took the full force of the impact. Following close consultation with the club’s medical staff, he was cleared to return home late on Saturday evening. The club will follow the FA’s protocol over the coming days whilst continually monitoring Neil Etheridge’s condition to ensure his safe return to action.’

Etheridge later took to Instagram to thank everyone for their well wishes and this morning has provided a further update via his Twitter page.

It reads: ‘Thank you for all the get well messages, I really appreciated them. Unfortunate circumstances that I had to come off but I will be fighting to come back soon. Luckily no fractures or breaks to any part of my body #KRO #Birmingham #Goalkeeper #thankful #support.’

Regardless of whether the shot-stopper comes through concussion protocol this week, it’s unlikely we’ll see him suit up against Coventry City on Good Friday with Connal Trueman the likely candidate to take his place.

Get well soon, Ethers!
