Birmingham City have been rebuffed after they made an approach to sign Jay Stansfield.

As first reported by Telegraph journalist John Percy, a bid of £10m was made to Fulham to sign the 21-year-old. It would have absolutely smashed the League One transfer record, which currently stands at £3.4m.

Blues have now discovered the Cottagers' stance on Stansfield, and that is they want to keep him at Craven Cottage. According to Alex Powell, a journalist for the BBC, a bid in the region of £10m has been rejected.

It should come as no surprise, as earlier this month Marco Silva said that he wanted to keep the forward in West London. Stansfield was part of their plans in pre-season, and so far he's been involved in their squad for their opening two Premier League matches.

He was back at St Andrew's earlier this week but as an opposition player, and he scored upon his return and didn't celebrate out of the respect to a club he enjoyed playing for last season. Despite suffering relegation from the Championship, Stansfield was their leading player, with 12 goals and two assists in 43 games, and that was enough for Birmingham to re-consider signing him, but they will now have to consider whether they up their bid.

“I’m almost 100 per cent sure that he’s going to be our player," said Silva in his post-match press conference following the 2-0 Carabao Cup win on Tuesday.

"Of course, I cannot guarantee to you 100 per cent because the market is open and it’s difficult to control the market every single time, but the plan for him is to be part of our squad.

“We did plan something for Jay since I joined the football club. In the first season, he was in the under-21s. Two years ago, it was a clear moment for senior football in League One. Last season, it was a moment for him to get another step.

“He proved his quality at this great club in the Championship and now he has to work hard to get the chance at our football club, to get the feeling of being a Premier League player. The plan for him after a good Championship season was to fight, I’m ready to help him to get in the right direction.
