Will Ferrell becoming ‘best friends’ with Jack Grealish sparks Birmingham City ownership fan reaction

Footballer Jack Grealish looks like he made a new best friend recently - and the friend came all the way from sunny Hollywood in the USA.

Former Aston Villa player Grealish, who is now with Manchester City, was pictured with Will Ferrell - who is renowned for his energetic humour. Grealish posed with the American comedian, actor, and producer - and star of much loved Christmas movie Elf.

Ferrell made a surprise visit to Etihad Stadium for the Man City v Aston Villa game yesterday (Sunday, February 12). The actor was in the country to support Wrexham - which is owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Ferrell was seen in a pub in Wrexham before their match as well.

On Sunday, before the Aston Villa vs Man City, Ferrell joked that he was in Manchester to find players for his MLS side Los Angeles FC. His visit to the game also sparked off jokes from from football fans about the ownership of Birmingham City.

A spoof Twitter account called @OfficialWilllF, which isn’t the actor’s official account, tweeted a picture of Ferrell with Grealish saying: “Great to meet my new British friend @JackGrealish at the Etihad today. He told me to buy @bcfc and to get them relegated to league 2.” More than 700,000 have viewed teh tweet which has had more than 12,000 likes.

Birmingham City fans have been protesting against the club’s owners for more than a year. The Championship club have been owned by China-based Birmingham Sports Holdings Limited since 2016. But issues have been raised about the state of St Andrew Stadium and fans are unhappy iwth the financial management of the club.

Despite the jokes, Blues fans defended their club amid the jokes. One person responded to the Twitter account saying: “Ain’t going to happen. We’re heading in the opposite direction.”

Meanwhile, Grealish actually did meet the actor. The footballer posted their photo on Instagram and wrote: “’Did we just become best friends?’what a man!!!”
