Sheffield United win transfer race for £3m Birmingham City and Preston North End target

A player strongly linked to Birmingham City is heading to one of the sides relegated from the Premier League last season.

Sheffield United have won the race to sign Peterborough United star Harrison Burrows, according to a report.

Our sister paper The Star which covers Sheffield United are reporting that a breakthrough has been made in the pursuit of Burrows. He is set to undergo a medical at Bramall Lane this week after a deal was agreed a few weeks ago. Personal terms had already been agreed, and now Burrows is set to move to the Blades for a fee of around £3m, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.

Sheffield United 'needed' a cash injection to help make the first part of the deal a possibility, and now with the proposed sale of Benie Traore to FC Basel, their move for Burrows can happen. Once Traore's move to Switzerland is confirmed, then United can conclude the transfer of Burrows.

Despite there being one year remaining on his contract with the Posh, he hadn't played in any of their pre-season games amid the uncertainty over his future. He was due to play against West Brom in a behind-closed-doors friendly but their manager Darren Ferguson said that interest in him had 'accelerated in the last 48 hours.'

The 22-year-old was a reported target for Preston North End and Birmingham, but is the side relegated from the Premier League that have won the race. North End had a bid rejected for Burrows, and weren't willing to go any higher and so they moved on. As for Birmingham's interest, owner Darragh MacAnthony said a 'massive' club in League One 'really wants him' but he was always destined for a move to the Championship.

Whilst signing a player of Burrows' ability would have been good given he has proved himself at this level, Birmingham are already well equipped in the left-back area. Lee Buchanan is staying at St Andrew's this season, whilst Alex Cochrane has arrived from Hearts, and so
