Birmingham City have completed their first major bit of summer business, securing Wolves defender Dion Sanderson on a season-long loan.

The 22-year-old spent the first half of the 21/22 season with Blues and became a firm hit with fans before being recalled to Molineux following defensive injury woes in the Black Country. He then went back out on loan for the second-half of the campaign at Championship rivals QPR, where he saw out the remainder of the season.

Sanderson made 26 appearances in the Championship last year, 16 of which were for Blues. The central defender becomes the first bit of business under new manager John Eustace ahead of the team’s pre-season tour to Portugal this week.

What are fans saying about the signing?

Posting on Twitter, many fans were pleased to see Sanderson return to St Andrew’s for a full season.

Craig Courtney from the Tilton Talk Show podcast, said: “When he started at the club (on loan last season) it’s fair to say he was rusty but once he settled he was a rock. The defence did not look the same when he left. Hopefully some further ones to come.”

One fan wrote: “In Nico Gordon and Dion Sanderson, Blues have two young, athletic centre halves who are comfortable on the ball and most importantly, are decent defenders.”

One fan wrote: “Welcome news at such a rubbish time for the club! The players that know the fan base know it’s not our fault and it’s great to see someone with such quality happy to return.”
