Where will Jude Bellingham end up this summer?

It’s the question everyone in the football world is asking - including those at his former club Birmingham City.

The Borussia Dortmund and England midfielder is set to be the man at the heart of this summer’s biggest transfer saga with the former Blues teenager expected to leave his current club for big money in the coming months.

The 19-year-old, who came through Blues’ academy before making a £20 million switch to Germany’s Bundesliga in 2020, is one of the most wanted players on the planet following his stellar performances captaining Dortmund this season as well as being one of England’s star players at the World Cup in the winter.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Real Madrid the five clubs looking to be the primary contenders for the Stourbridge-born playmaker at the end of the season.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool hav long been viewed as the favourites to sign Bellingham this summer, but Athletic journalist David Ornstein has provided an update on the 19-year-old’s future this morning (March 20) that won’t go down well on Merseyside.

Bellingham’s destination

There is no release clause in Bellingham’s 2025 deal at Dortmund. This means the German club have no obligation to sell Bellingham this summer, meaning it’s expected Dortmund will command a very high price for the former Blues midfielder.

Writing in his Athletic column on Monday morning, David Ornstein said this means it’s now unlikely that Liverpool will sign the midfielder.

He wrote: “That makes a deal challenging for every interested party and therefore - as things stand - it is regarded increasingly unlikely that Liverpool will sign Bellingham in this summer’s transfer window.”

Ornstein says the financial power of other clubs, primarily Manchester City and Real Madrid, means Liverpool will struggle to bring their number one target to Anfield in the coming months, although no firm decisions have been made at this moment.

What Bellingham’s summer move could mean for Blues

Birmingham City will receive a large sum of money if Bellingham were to be sold by Dortmund.

The 19-year-old would earn Blues even more funds if and when he makes another move. This is due to a sell-on clause that was included in the deal that brought Bellingham to Germany in 2020.

According to The Athletic, Birmingham will receive ‘at least’ five percent of any sum Dortmund receive for the English international. This means if he were to leave the club for £100 million, Blues would get at least £5 million of that. Likewise, if Dortmund were to stretch the figure to £150 million, £7.5 million or more would be heading to St Andrew’s.
