Chris Davies running out of superlatives for 'dangerous' Birmingham City star

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has hailed Tomoki Iwata after the midfielder scored his six goal of the season in the 2-0 victory away at Exeter City.

Iwata, signed from Celtic for just under £1million in August, has immediately hit the ground running as one of the best midfielders in the English third tier. Fellow summer acquisition Marc Leonard, a star man for Northampton Town last campaign, has been resorted to the bench as a result of Iwata’s fine form.

Not only has the Japan international been netting on a regular basis, but his goals have all been straight from the top drawer. The technique on show has been simply levels above League One as all six of Iwata’s goals have come from outside the penalty area, leaving Davies short of superlatives to describe his number 24.

“He’s dangerous and he has good technique,” Davies told Blues TV. “Obviously, we have seen it on both feet and he keeps it down and puts good power and accuracy on it, arriving on the edge of the box he’s a goalscorer.

“It’s excellent for Tomoki, but the main thing with that is that it was the positions we were all in - the team were in - and it allowed him to arrive and score. Excellent from his point of view; another goal.”

Birmingham, third in League One but with fixtures in hand, have scored the fourth most goals in the division so far this season. Davies has been disappointed by the 15 conceded in as many outings but Blues should be flying once they sure up defensively.

Next up, a trip to Blackpool awaits in the FA Cup second round before Birmingham play host to fellow promotion hopefuls Stockport County three days later.
