The Championship returned from the international break with a bang for some but it was anti-climatic for others as some contrasting results hit England’s second tier.
West Midlands sides Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion had mixed weekends as Blues won but The Baggies drew.
John Eustace’s side earned a surprise 1-0 victory over an in-form Blackburn Rovers side, soaring up to 16th in the table, nine points above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, West Brom were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Millwall in a six-pointer clash for the play-off spots, managing just one shot on target out of 16 attempts.
It was tension galore in the highly-anticipated South Wales derby, with Swansea City scoring a 98th-minute winner to beat rivals Cardiff City away from home.
The Bluebirds suffered a big blow to their survival hopes with that defeat and then were thrust into yet more trouble as Huddersfield Town earned a surprise three points.
Neil Warnock’s men came from behind to beat play-off chasers Middlesbrough in an exciting 4-2 win on home soil, closing the gap to Cardiff to goal difference alone.
Elsewhere, Stoke City thrashed Coventry City by four goals to nil to move well away from danger and Sheffield United boosted their automatic promotion chances with a 1-0 win at Norwich City.
Luton Town beat Watford 2-0 to tighten their grasp on the top six, whereas Preston North End eased past Blackpool with a 3-1 victory on home soil.
Other than that, there wasn’t much else to report in the division, with two more 0-0 scorelines and a 1-1 draw between Bristol City and Reading.
So many players impressed this weekend just gone that it would be difficult to select just 11 to form a team of the week but, rather thankfully, WhoScored’s rating system makes things a lot easier.
