Birmingham City failed to make their game in hand count as they lost 1-0 to Middlesbrough in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday.

Blues' Championship status is in a precarious position with the team just one point above the relegation zone. Birmingham's match against managerless Watford isn't quite must-win but there is a real needed for a victory to improve the mood around the place. Should Blues fail to win they could drop in to the relegation zone if Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday record victories.

From Sheffield Wednesday who are 23rd to Plymouth Argyle in 17th, there is just three points separating seven teams. It goes to show how competitive the second tier of English football is, but Birmingham who in October looked to be play-off contenders, didn't want to be in this position. The arrival of Tom Wagner and NFL legend Tom Brady was meant to change the fortunes around St Andrew's but instead they find themselves battling for their lives again.

After Tuesday's defeat there are nine games left and 27 points to play for. A double-header awaits Birmingham and their rivals over Easter when the international break is done and it will be crunch time.

Defeat to Middlesbrough on Tuesday has left Birmingham fans feeling down about their side but is there anything that could help fans get over their current predicament? Football WP might be able to help out as they think that Birmingham will avoid relegation. They use a variety of data to predict every remaining result, and have Birmingham finishing in 18th.

According to Football WP, a 1-1 draw with Watford has been predicted for the weekend, but then they'll lose to QPR away. Birmingham will respond however by beating Preston North End, but also lose to league leaders Leicester City. Cardiff City will lose 1-0 to Blues in mid-April before Birmingham also get a point off of Coventry City.

It has then been predicted however that basement side Rotherham United will claim a surprise victory over Birmingham, before another loss to relegation rival Huddersfield. A final day win over Norwich City then sees Birmingham finishes 18th on 50 points and six points above safety.

As for who are tipped to go down well both Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town will head to League One on 44 points with QPR avoiding the drop by three points, whilst Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City finish on 48 points apiece. Elsewhere in the prediction, Birmingham's West Midlands rivals West Brom are tipped to hold on to fifth and finish in the play-offs. Leicester City despite their recent run of form are still being tipped to break Reading's record points tally and go up alongside Leeds United.
