Birmingham City could allow their former club captain Dion Sanderson to leave in the January transfer window.

That’s according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, who has posted on his Patreon that Blues could let Sanderson leave on loan.

The 24-year-old has found first-team opportunities hard to come by in the league this season. He started the opening day clash against Reading, but was given a red card against Charlton Athletic, and then spent over a month on the sidelines with an injury.

He had a two-minute cameo off of the bench in Birmingham's last match against Northampton Town, but before that he was an unused substitute in their last three League One games. Most of his minutes have come in the EFL Trophy, playing against Shrewsbury Town and Fulham's under-21s. This season he's played five times and three of those starts have come in cup competitions.

Sanderson has been at the club for over two seasons after penning a four-year deal after his loan was made permanent in 2023. He was signed for a fee of around £2m and there were also a sell-on clause inserted in the deal.

He was appointed captain last summer, but was stripped of the captaincy in April. Krystian Bielik has since taken on the responsibility following the appointment of Chris Davies.

Back in May it was reported by the Daily Record that Scottish Premiership club Rangers were interested in Sanderson. He was a target when Mick Beale was in charge and remained a person of interest despite a change of manager.

Birmingham City and Rangers have each others number as the two did several bits of business over the summer. They took Ben Davies and Scott Davies off Rangers’ hands and both have been smart additions to the squad.

A busy period awaits Birmingham with an FA Cup tie against Blackpool and an EFL Trophy clash to come in December. There are nine League One games to be played until the transfer window opens as well and so as long as Sanderson stays fit, he’ll be on stand-by ahead of a busy period.
