Blues have been eager to bolster their options in wide areas - especially after the departure of Keshi Anderson - and it appears the attention has turned to the loan market. Birmingham previously saw a swoop for Mjallby forward Abdoulie Manneh fall through at the final hurdle, so they had to switch their focus to alternative targets.

Loaning from the Premier League is often a good option - as seen by Blues’ move for Patrick Roberts from Sunderland in the summer - but it’s an approach which comes with its risks. In this case, Osman is yet to be fully proven at the top level and he is still a very raw talent.

Birmingham ‘closing in’ on £16m Premier League winger

According to a report from The Brighton Base, Blues are ‘closing in’ on a move to sign Ibrahim on loan for the rest of the season. It’s claimed Brighton are going to cancel Osman’s loan at French outfit Auxerre early before sending him to St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park for another crack of the whip.

Osman, who joined Brighton from Danish club Nordsjaelland in 2024 for around £16 million, has failed to hit the ground running on the south coast. The three-time Ghana international is yet to make a single senior competitive appearance for the Seagulls.

The winger’s loans so far haven’t been the best, either, as he was largely an impact substitute at Feyenoord last season and has performed a similar role in Ligue 1 this campaign. Auxerre had the option to buy Osman at the end of his loan but, if the above report is to be believed, that will no longer go through.

How would Ibrahim Osman fit in at Birmingham City?

Despite struggling to make his mark ever since leaving Denmark 18 months or so ago, Osman remains an exciting talent and Blues could try and tap into the potential that Brighton clearly signed him for.

Birmingham need depth on the wings and Osman can play on either side, or even as a centre-forward. That versatility would offer head coach Chris Davies some handy flexibility, while Osman also has the pace and power to change games in an instant.

You may be thinking, if Osman has such ability, then why hasn’t he shown it just yet? Well, it’s a fair question to ask, but that’s the kind of risk you have to take when loaning from Premier League clubs.

Birmingham will just be hoping this deal works out better than another loan deal from the Seagulls, as Eiran Cashin hardly played before being recalled this month. James Beadle, another loanee from Brighton, has had better fortunes in the West Midlands as he has now taken over Ryan Allsop’s role as the first-choice goalkeeper at St Andrew’s.
