Rotherham United have completed the signing of former Manchester United defender Tyler Blackett on a permanent transfer, making good use of the free agent market. The signing, which comes out of the blue, could dent the survival hopes of Birmingham City, with The Millers currently one point above them in the table.

Blackett’s arrival in South Yorkshire could also spell bad news for the likes of Blackpool, Huddersfield Town, Wigan Athletic, Cardiff City and Queens Park Rangers, who are all in the mix. The defender is actually formerly of two of the clubs mentioned, as he enjoyed loan spells at Blackpool and Birmingham between 2013 and 2014.

Now, though, he could be a hindrance to Blues rather than a helping hand – especially with Rotherham already carrying some momentum. Matt Taylor’s side have won two of their last three games, including an impressive 2-1 home victory over play-off hopefuls Sunderland. They also crucially beat QPR 3-1 in their last outing.

Birmingham, on the other hand, have suffered nine defeats in their last 12 matches, with just seven points earned out of the last possible 36. John Eustace has been feeling the pressure with the gap to the drop now just seven points and things could soon get even worse, with Blues’ next game in fact at home to Rotherham – on Saturday, March 11.
