Birmingham City manager Lee Bowyer is still hoping to strengthen the side before the end of the January transfer window and claims they should be able to bring in ‘two at least.’

The Blues have already added Teden Mengi, Onel Hernandez and Taylor Richards this month - all on loan but Bowyer wants more and adds that at least one of the additions will be a permanent one.

“I think it’s important, we need to improve the squad,” the manager explained following the 2-1 victory over Barnsley.

“Again young JJ [Jordan James] starts nearly every game, I rested him against Fulham, he has been playing a lot but he is a young lad and it will catch up with him soon.

“Again we have got young Jobe on the bench, poor lad, he is missing school at the moment. He is missing out on minutes he should be playing with the 23s, missing out on his development if you like because we need to put him on the bench.

“Of late he has been the only attacking player we have had on our bench, so our hands are tied a lot at the moment.

“We need to improve the squad and I am sure we will.

“I would like to think we will bring in at least two and Craig is working hard on that. I think we are bringing in two at least.

“We have got one loan space left so we can’t bring in two loans, at least one of them is going to have to be permanent.”

Bowyer went on to add that he’d like to strenghten every position on the pitch to give the team more depth but stated attack as his key priority following the departure of Chuks Aneke.

“We have just lost Chuks Aneke, he would have been perfect today and against Preston to bring off the bench but we ain’t got that to help out – especially with Jukey been out for three or four weeks with a hamstring injury, he said.

“He is in his 30s, he is doing great, he is giving everything like he always does but I don’t want to kill him out there. That’s a position I think we need.”
