Birmingham City manager Lee Bowyer has fired yet another transfer plea to the owners ahead of Saturday’s Championship clash with Millwall.

The Blues currently sit 14th in the league table but with how tight things have been so far this campaign - one win could take them as high as eighth.

Aside from the top two who appear to be streets ahead of the rest, this year’s Championship appears to be as close fought as it ever has been.

There are just six points between Stoke City who occupy the final play-off spot and Preston North End who currently sit below Blues in 17th.

It’s fine margins and Bowyer is well aware of the opportunity that could present itself.

“There’s definitely not much in it,” he said.

“Teams can go on runs and I think two or three weeks ago, if we’d have won I think we’d have gone a point off the play-offs.

“It’s crazy because you lose one and you think how have we ended up back down there.

“And you’ve got teams like Hull that have put a run together and they’ve closed that gap becuse there was a gap starting to open but they’ve now closed that.

“Obviously Reading have been punished so now they are above the drop zone and they are a top top side.

“Reading were in and around the play-offs last season so if you give them their six points back they are in and around us so there’s not much in it at all.”

Birmingham are already light on numbers before you take into account the injury situation and players loan-spells ending.

And yet they sit just three points off of eighth.

With reinforcements, there is absolutely no reason why this side can’t challenge. They have the attacking talent and they know how to keep a clean-sheet too - keeping more than any side in the division in fact.

But they simply don’t have the man power to deal with inevitable injuries and so forth.

It’s well documented that Bowyer expects to receive little to no funds but if he does - and that’s a huge if - there is a potential for an unlikely push towards the play-offs.

The boss claimed it’s a perfect time to take advantage of the league table as it is now but without investment ‘you’re dreaming.’

“I think it is [a good time to take advantage of it] but you need backing,” he added.

“You need some backing.

“In January if we bring the right people in and we’re allowed to bring people in then there’s no reason that you can’t have a little outside look at what’s going on at the top end.

“But if we don’t? No, you’re dreaming.”
