Birmingham City defender Harlee Dean has told those at Sheffield Wednesday that he will be ‘available on a free’ this summer despite his contract at Blues running until June 2023.

The former club captain at St Andrew’s has spent the second half of this season on loan at the Owls in League One and though he admits he’s not spoken about a potential permanent move to Hillsborough beyond this year, he told reporters at the Sheffield Star that any potential new team won’t need to pay a fee to land his services.

“I know I’m not going to be at Birmingham next season,” Dean said, following Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers.

“I’m going to be available on a free, so whenever that comes in the summer that’s what happens - we’ll deal with that then.

“The present is about making the Play-Offs, and that’s all we’re concentrating on.”

The 30-year-old wouldn’t be drawn as to whether he would like to stay in Yorkshire past this season but once again made it pretty clear that he wouldn’t be returning to Blues

“I can’t comment on that, because it’s not my place to say, I can’t make decisions for other people,” he added.

“I’m enjoying my football, and I know I can better. I want to achieve something this year with Sheffield Wednesday, and that’s my future at the minute.”

Following his arrival from Brentford in 2017, Dean went on to make 184 appearances for Blues, scoring eight goals and providing two assists.
