Birmingham City loanee Tahith Chong has stepped up his comeback following successful thigh surgery.

The 22-year-old was recalled to parent club Manchester United while he recovers from the operation, and hasn’t featured for Lee Bowyer’s men since late October.

Chong’s loan deal at St. Andrews is still in effect, however, and the wide man is expected to return to the Midlands once he is deemed fit enough to do so.

Speaking to the Birmingham Mail recently, City boss Bowyer gave a cautious update on the player’s progress.

“It’s still going to be a little while”, he said.

“When we do finally get him back, he’s still got to train with us for two weeks before we can start introducing him to games. He’s still a little way off yet.”

But Birmingham hopes of a relatively swift return for the popular winger will have been boosted by images from Man United showing him back outside and taking part in training sessions on grass.

Chong’s recovery is still likely to take a while longer, and it is understood that United will wait for him to resume full contact training before allowing him to return to Birmingham, but following on from this latest update, there is an expectation that he could be fit by the end of February.

So far this term, the Dutch youth international has featured 13 times for City in the Championship, registering three assists and generally impressing with his energetic contributions from wide areas.

Upon his return to St. Andrews, Chong will link up with fellow United prospect Teden Mengi, who moved to the Midlands on loan in January, and has already made six appearances.
