Birmingham City have reportedly been told that Paul Smyth, who was linked with a late move to St Andrew’s before the January deadline, is not for sale. League Two outfit Leyton Orient are unwilling to part ways with their forward, who is seen as incredibly valuable to their automatic playoff push.

Rumours had begun emerging on social media forums that Blues, who have been stuck in a rut of poor form of late, were set to sign Smyth. Those links have now been rubbished. According to The Independent, “there is nothing” in the speculation, with Orient “unwilling to let their top goal scorer leave” the club this month.

With nine goals in 24 League Two appearances this term, as well as one assist, Smyth has played a key role in helping Orient to the summit of the league standings. With Stevenage, Northampton Town and Carlisle beginning to close in, however, they will need to regain some form if they want to keep their place. Smyth staying will certainly help their case.

Meanwhile, a late West Brom transfer theory has emerged

In other West Midlands transfer news, West Bromwich Albion are finally set to complete their first signing of the January window, albeit on the last day available. Fulham midfielder Nathan Chalobah is undergoing a medical for the Baggies ahead of a transfer, according to The Athletic. The former Chelsea ace should offer Albion some extra squad depth and versatility.

West Brom could yet add further reinforcements with hours still to go, and supporters have begun theorising about a Fulham decision that could mean not one, but two additions coming in from Craven Cottage. Marco Silva’s side have just announced the mutual contract termination of Josh Onomah - and Baggies fans have identified him as a potential surprise signing.

Taking to Twitter, @AllNewsWBA suggested: “I’d bring him on a short contract until the end of the season,” whereas @spenna1988 said: “If I’m being greedy I would take Onomah.” It must be stressed this is purely speculation, but who knows - another player with Premier League experience available on a free transfer is exactly what West Brom will be scouting out for.
