Birmingham City are set to buy new land with plans for a new stadium in the city

Birmingham City Football Club is reportedly set to purchase land owned by the city council as the club aims to build a new stadium.

According to the BBC, the club's new American owners Knighthead Capital Management are set to purchase the Birmingham Wheels site, on Bordesley Park. Birmingham City Council documents show that the land is in the process of being sold off to an unnamed bidder, which is believed to be Blues.

The proposed site is just over a mile away from the club's St Andrew's stadium in the east of the city. The site, called Wheels Park, was a former motor racing site with a go-kart track still located on the land.

Following Knighthead's takeover of the club last year, there had been rumours that the new owners could look to move away from St Andrew's as they aim to move the club forward.

The deal is due to be signed off on Wednesday (March 27).3,000 jobs could be created as part of the stadium development on the land.

In a statement to the BBC, a city council spokesperson couldn't confirm who the purchaser was at this stage, but said: "The proposed disposal will generate a capital receipt and the council will work with the purchaser to connect the job and training opportunities created to the local community.

"Future planning applications for the site will be the subject of public consultation."
