Birmingham City ‘face competition’ from West Brom for Barnsley defender

Birmingham City are on the hunt for a new defender.

Birmingham City are reportedly considering a move for Barnsley’s Liam Kitching this month, according to the Sunday Mirror (16.01.21 - pg. 65).

The Blues are eyeing up defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window and the Barnsley centre-back is one that has been on their radar.

The 22-year-old has been a vital part of the Tykes’ squad this season after signing for the club last January.

Birmingham City fans may remember Kitching from their league meeting in September, with the centre-back receiving a red card and a three-game ban following an altercation with Chuks Aneke.

Despite this, Kitching has been a shining light in a very disappointing campaign for Barnsley and it is no surprise that he has attracted interest elsewhere.

If the Blues are to pursue their interest in the defender then they will face competition from West Brom.

The Baggies boss, Valerien Ismael, knows the 22-year-old well from his time in Yorkshire and is keen to reunite with Kitching at The Hawthorns.

With Barnsley’s Championship status in doubt, it is likely that interest will grow in acquiring Kitching’s services and Lee Bowyer will have to act fast if they are to snap him up.

Birmingham City have already signed Manchester United defender Teden Mengi on loan this month, days after Dion Sanderson was recalled by Wolverhampton Wanderers.
