Birmingham City confirm mid-season transfer as ex-Aston Villa man takes on fresh challenge

Blues have announced a mid-season transfer with a short-term loan agreed for a striker.

Birmingham City youngster Finley Thorndike has signed for Vanarama National League North outfit Boston United on a temporary basis until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who signed a two-year professional contract with Blues last June, was part of the squad for the pre-season training camp in Portugal.

Birmingham are the third club in the West Midlands that he has played for as he has represented both West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa at an academy level.

Thorndike, who has scored two goals and contributed two assists in 11 appearances for Birmingham’s U21 side this campaign, heads out on his first loan move for his career.

Thorndike used to play for Villa before signing for Birmingham, but he was delighted to switch claret for blue as he is a boyhood Bluenose.

Boston, managed by Ian Culverhouse, are currently 18th in the English sixth tier. Safety is not yet secured for The Pilgrims as they are just three points above the drop.

It is hoped the addition of Thorndike can help Boston secure their National League North status for another season.
