'Never' - Birmingham City boss Chris Davies reacts to League One points record & makes 'incredible' prediction

Chris Davies has reacted to Birmingham City beating Wolverhampton Wanderers’ League One points record.

Birmingham manager Chris Davies has admitted he never even dreamt of smashing the League One points record when he took over last summer.

The 40-year-old hadn’t taken on a leading manager’s role before joining Blues but he’s already achieved a feat so many head coaches would strive towards throughout their entire careers.

Birmingham’s 4-0 thrashing of Mansfield Town on Sunday was enough to move up to 105 points, smashing Wolverhampton Wanderers’ League One tally of 103. It was Blues’ final home game of the season and the victory ensured Davies’ men maintained their remarkable unbeaten league status at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park.

When asked if breaking the record was ever in his mind earlier in the campaign, Davies replied: “To be honest, no, it wasn’t! My mind at the start of the season was, ‘Let’s win a few games and see how we go’.

“But obviously, as we got started and got going, I was aware of what they had done previously, Wolves. It is an incredible achievement and I’ll keep saying this and saying this: to get 105 points in a season, people might take it for granted but it’s not something to be taken for granted.”

On whether Blues’ total would ever be beaten, Davies added: “It’s an incredible achievement to go and get that amount of points, the consistency that they’ve shown week in, week out. That was their 58th game of the season! That 105 points, I really don’t think that’ll get touched again.”

Chris Davies reflects on Birmingham trophy lift

Blues had already secured the League One title before their Vertu Trophy final defeat at Wembley a fortnight ago, managing to build a sufficient gap to Wrexham with six games remaining. It’s been a tantalising wait for the final home game of the campaign ever since, knowing that would be the day of the trophy lift.

The occasion certainly didn’t disappoint, living up to every ounce of expectation. A sold-out St Andrew’s crowd wasn’t only treated to a spectacle on the pitch in the form of a dominant victory, but also a terrific podium and outpouring of joy.

Captain Krystian Bielik held the trophy aloft with the help of vice-skipper Christoph Klarer and club legend Lukas Jutkiewicz, before champagne was sprayed all over. A lap of honour followed for all the players, Davies and his staff, as well as many of their families.

Davies couldn’t be prouder of Blues and was delighted with how the big occasion went. “It was a really special day for the club, I was aware it would be amazing no matter what but I wanted to make sure we signed off unbeaten and with a great performance. We had all that,” Davies said.

“It was a really good day for us and the scenes at the end were a season’s worth of work being celebrated. Picking up the trophy and lifting it front of the fans and the way the sun was shining on us today, it was a special occasion.”
