Birmingham City announce first transfer of the summer - just hours after the window opened

Birmingham City youngster Jobe Bellingham has signed for fellow Sky Bet Championship side Sunderland on a permanent deal.

The 17-year-old, who is the younger brother of Real Madrid and England midfielder Jude Bellingham, joins the Black Cats ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Although the fee is undisclosed by both clubs, it’s understood to be in the region of £1.5 million, giving Blues a financial boost.

Bellingham racked up 26 professional appearances for Birmingham, including four successive starts at the end of last term.

The midfielder’s departure leaves John Eustace with just 16 senior players contracted to the club ahead of a busy transfer window.

Upon signing for Sunderland, Bellingham said: “I’m delighted to sign and I can’t wait to get started.

“The opportunity for young players to move here and progress is clear, so I believe this is perfect for me to continue my development.

“I’m grateful to everyone at Birmingham City for their support over the past 11 years and I wish them the best for the future, as I begin the next chapter of my career at the Stadium of Light.”
