Birmingham City man 'set' for seven-figure Huddersfield Town switch after rejecting transfer last year

Birmingham City are preparing for the start of the new Championship season

Birmingham City are well stocked up with options at the top end of the pitch. They have delved into the market this summer to snap up the likes of Demarai Gray and Kyogo Furuhashi. The Blues also already have Jay Stansfield and Lyndon Dykes to call upon.

Chris Davies’ side stormed to the League One title at the first time of asking last season. They won promotion to the Championship along with Wrexham and Charlton Athletic. The Midlands outfit smashed the record points tally in the process.

Birmingham City striker Alfie May poised for Huddersfield Town switch

Birmingham City striker Alfie May is ‘set’ to join Huddersfield Town for £1.2million, according to Football League World. The Blues are poised to cut ties with the attacker in this window. They only signed him around 12 months ago from Charlton Athletic.

May, 32, still has a couple of years left to run down on his contract. However, he may find game time hard to come by in the next campaign due to competition for his position. Therefore, an exit to the Terriers will give him more of an opportunity to get regular football back in the third tier.

The former Doncaster Rovers and Cheltenham Town man made 57 appearances for Birmingham last term and scored 17 goals, 16 of which came in the league. Prior to his transfer, he was prolific during his time at Charlton. He found the net on 27 occasions in 50 outings for the Addicks during his days at The Valley before heading out the exit door for a new challenge.

Alfie May rejected Huddersfield Town for Birmingham City last year

Huddersfield tried to sign May before Birmingham won the race for him from Charlton. The Yorkshire club are aiming to get promoted as soon as they can. They are managed by former Premier League goalkeeper Lee Grant these days. The Terriers have made some solid signings recently like Ryan Ledson, Marcus Harness and Jack Whatmough, among others.

May said in an interview in May: “I was nearly a Huddersfield player but the minute I actually spoke to the gaffer and the plan that he set out and said to me, it was something I just really wanted to be a part of. I’m not saying Huddersfield won’t get back to the Championship. I’m 31, the drive the gaffer had to get this club back to the Championship, I just wanted to be a part of it.

“I made the right choice. Next year I’m going to be a Championship player. I can tell my kids that I’ve played in the Championship and that will mean a lot to me.”

After joining the Blues, he said at the time: "It is a good project to be involved in. Speaking with the manager and (tecnnical director) Craig Gardner, the journey they want to go on as a club, they shouldn't be in League One. It is exciting times. I want to hit the ground running, push on and, hopefully, get promoted."
