Birmingham City have completed the loan signing of Manchester United defender Teden Mengi.

Nineteen-year-old Mengi has joined Blues on loan until the end of the 2021/22 season.

The move for the Manchester United centre half, who has made two senior appearances for the Red Devils so far, was confirmed on Tuesday morning.

Mengi is one of two United youth players on loan at St Andrew’s, with Taith Chong also enjoying a stint with Lee Bowyer’s side.

Speaking to Birmingham’s official club media, Mengi said: “I am delighted to be here. [I am] ready to work hard and kick on for the rest of the season.

“It was important for me to try and find what was best for me, which is here at Blues and to just kick on and get as many games under my belt and improve as much as I can as a player and as a person.

“As soon as I heard about Blues I was straight on the phone to [Tahith] Chongy and he told me it is great, the lads are great, I am going to enjoy it, everyone is a nice person, so I am just looking forward to it.”

This is Mengi’s second loan move away from Old Trafford, after joining Derby County last season. However, the switch to Pride Park was cut short due to injury.

The young defender, who played in the 1-1 draw with Young Boys last month, will wear the No.18 jersey for the Blues.

Mengi is highly regarded at United and has been a regular for their Under-23s side this term, captaining the underage team for most of the campaign.

In a statement on their website, United said: “Everybody at the club wishes Teden the best of luck on his new adventure.”
