Aston Villa's Premier League rivals sack manager in sudden turn of events

Manchester United have decided to sack manager Erik ten Hag with imminent effect.

The Red Devils have finally pulled the trigger on relieving their Dutch head coach of his duties after a thoroughly disappointing start to the 2024/25 season.

Ten Hag, who faced Aston Villa merely three weeks ago in a dull 0-0 draw at Villa Park, has been under pressure for several months. Earning a point against Villa perhaps earned ten Hag a little extra time to turn the tide at Old Trafford but he now exits United after 28 months.

An official statement from Man Utd confirming their boss’ departure reads: “Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

“We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

Ten Hag’s sacking is a decision that’s been brewing for a long while and Sunday’s 2-1 defeat away at West Ham United proved to be the final straw. Down in 14th in the Premier League standings and without a win in three Europa League outings, United were left with very little choice.
