Unai Emery provided updates on Morgan Rogers and Matty Cash after Aston Villa’s heavy 4-1 loss at Tottenham Hotspur.

Emery expects Rogers to be fine but there are concerns over Cash, who limped off after receiving treatment.

Villa’s first choice right-back went down holding his calf on the hour-mark and his replacement, Diego Carlos, went on to make several errors in a calamitous substitute appearance. Ezri Konsa moving across to full-back didn’t help matters, either, as Villa’s defensive rhythm was interrupted.

Rogers, meanwhile, was kicked two or three times before being replaced by Jhon Duran in the 69th minute. Villa’s number 27, the opening goalscorer in the game, was rarely afforded space in behind by Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur, who crunched in with several challenges.

Emery confirmed the latest on both Rogers and Cash during the post-match press conference. “I think Morgan will be ok because he wanted to carry on playing but I decided no because after two kicks I had an opportunity to play some minutes with two strikers. Cash felt something in his calf, hopefully not a lot but he felt it,” the manager said.

Rogers getting the all clear comes as a great relief for Villa but Cash’s injury is concerning ahead of two more tough away games in the next six days. Villa head to Belgium to face Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday before travelling to Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday.

If Cash is unavailable for either or both, Konsa is likeliest to fill in at right-back, with Carlos potentially moving into the middle once again. Tyrone Mings will be eager to start but Emery prefers not to play two left-footed players, so Carlos could survive despite his poor display at Spurs.
