Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery is reportedly unconvinced by defensive pairing Matty Cash and Lucas Digne, causing a bit of a headache toward the end of the transfer window. It is said the new man in the dugout is ‘open to an overhaul’ in the full-back positions.

Emery has already strengthened his side with two new additions this month, one of which makes good sense with said reported hope for an overhaul. Alex Moreno, who joined from La Liga side Real Betis in a deal worth around £12.5 million, has already impressed with Digne out with a shoulder injury.

The other new face is Jhon Duran, a 19-year-old wonderkid striker from Chicago Fire. His arrival is particularly exciting considering he was wanted by some of the biggest clubs in Europe, including fellow Premier League sides Manchester United and Liverpool. Albeit one for the future, his entry brings significant promise.

According to The Daily Mail, “Emery is not thought to be convinced by either” Digne or Cash. The report states Villa “may look for a right-back”, with experienced defender Ashley Young set to turn 38 in July. Although perhaps unlikely to happen this month, we could see some movement in the summer months, with either - or both - Cash and Digne leaving as Emery makes his mark.

Meanwhile, Wolves target admits ‘talks have been had’ amid links

In other West Midlands transfer news, Wolverhampton Wanderers have been handed a boost in their pursuit of West Ham United striker Michail Antonio. The 32-year-old has admitted ‘talks’ have been had, with his future well up in the air. He also added his seven-year stint at West Ham is longer than what he has been used to, hinting at a move.

Speaking to The Footballer’s Football Podcast, Antonio said: “Honestly, I’ve not ruled anything out, that’s all I’m going to say. There are talks, so whatever happens, happens. I’m not saying goodbye. I’m saying if it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t. I won’t be upset about staying but if I leave, I’ve enjoyed my time here and football is football.”
