Unai Emery was delighted overall with Aston Villa’s 3-0 win over AFC Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon but there was a pair of players in particular who he had special praise for. It was a dominant performance from The Villans, especially in the closing 10 minutes, as Emery recorded his biggest home victory to date.

Douglas Luiz opened the scoring within 10 minutes as he struck a Leon Bailey cross from close range but it was a nervy 70 minutes or so at 1-0 as Bournemouth pressured on the counter attack. Villa were able to hold on despite some Dominic Solanke opportunities and went into top gear to close off the game.

Jacob Ramsey, who put on a brilliant showing all day, picked up the ball from an Ollie Watkins nod-down and dribbled his way through The Cherries’ defence before slotting it past Neto. Emiliano Buendia then added a third to put the game beyond doubt, heading in from Tyrone Mings’ knock-on.

“Ramsey, he did a very good step ahead,” Emery said post-match. “He is taking confidence, scoring a goal and trying to use his characteristics in the position we are putting him. Driving and breaking defensive lines. In the last matches he didn’t get his performances [right] but today he did it.

“Today I am [also] very happy with Douglas Luiz. His skill and characteristics in the squad are very important. In every match, he is very focused. Keeping ball possession, keeping good positions, and taking our time. His characteristics are necessary in this team. Today is this match, I think his performance overall was the best with us,” Emery continued.

Saturday’s win soared Villa into the top half of the Premier League for the first time in months ahead of the international break, putting huge smiles on supporters. There is now real hope that The Lions could mount a serious challenge for the European places this campaign – a remarkable recovery considering the disappointing start to the season.
