Unai Emery and Ange Postecoglou in double disagreement after Aston Villa 0-4 Tottenham

Unai Emery has disagreed with Ange Postecgolou's comments following Aston Villa's 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday afternoon. The Villa head coach's opinion differed entirely from that of his opposite number when analysing the manner of the defeat in the post-match press conference.

It was a fairly even first half between the two UEFA Champions League hopefuls but Tottenham came out firing at the start of the second 45 and they scored two quickfire goals. John McGinn was then shown a straight red card for a powerful swipe at Destiny Udogie's leg, giving Spurs freedom to attack and add to their tally.

McGinn's sending-off appeared to be the point of no return in the game but Postecoglou believes it wasn't as vital of an incident as many have declared. "I don't think it was a key moment as I thought we were well in control and the ascendancy at 2-0 up. I don't think it changed the game," Postecoglou said.

Emery, meanwhile, had a contrasting view. "Of course, the red card was definitely the moment the match was more difficult for us. The red card changed the game completely," the Villa boss said. “John McGinn always plays here being strong, comfortable, very passionate. He’s not a player doing things with bad intentions," Emery continued.

The importance of the Villa skipper's red wasn't the only matter the two managers disagreed on. Postecoglou has revealed he smelt blood when he spotted the hosts fatiguing but Emery believes his players had enough energy to compete.

"I had a sense towards the back end of the first half that they were beginning to really tire a little bit," Postecoglou revealed. "That was the message at half-time – just to persevere, stay calm, play our football, maintain the intensity, which is going to be important. And we did. We got off to a flyer, the quality of our football was excellent," Postecoglou said.

The team talk must have worked as Spurs' intensity improved immediately before their first two goals. But it wasn't a matter of Villa lacking energy themselves, Emery asserts. "No," the Spaniard replied when told about Postecoglou's opinion. "We created in the first half chances from a corner and two from the transition.

"Tired? I think we were ready to play and not being tired. The circumstances in the second half, we started as well getting in their box. When they got in our box the first time in the second half they scored and the second was a mistake we made. With 2-0, we tried to react and tried to push, as well to change with fresh players," Emery continued.
