Manchester City are reportedly plotting a move to re-sign Aston Villa star midfielder Douglas Luiz in the summer but face competition from fellow Premier League title challengers Arsenal.

The Brazil international has been one of Villa's best assets this campaign. Not only has he helped Unai Emery's side dictate possession but he's also scored nine goals and contributed four assists in the Premier League. For someone who plays as far back as Luiz, those figures are seriously impressive and other clubs understandably want a piece of the action.

Football Insider reports Man City are "stepping up their interest" in Luiz, with Pep Guardiola feeling the player has improved significantly in the past two seasons. The Cityzens once had a buy-back clause but that has now expired, so a transfer battle would likely commence with Arsenal and any other potential suitors.

The Gunners have been heavily linked with Luiz for several years and the link just won't go away. It's clear Mikel Arteta and co admire the Brazilian but whether they are willing or able to stump up the £100 million Villa are reportedly asking for awaits to be seen. The same can be said with City, who are walking on eggshells regarding Financial Fair Play.

Villa are reluctant to sell Luiz, especially with another season of European football beckoning. Financial troubles of their own could force a sale, however, with such a huge sale capable of eradicating many of their issues. What's for certain is this Luiz saga is bound to continue for months to come.
