Aston Villa ‘initiate talks’ over new 'lightning' signing wanted by Chelsea and Newcastle United

The latest Premier League transfer news as Aston Villa begin talks over a Chelsea, Newcastle and Brentford target.

Aston Villa have reportedly commenced initial discussions with Ligue 1 club Lille over the potential summer signing of striker Jonathan David.

The Canada international, wanted by a host of other Premier League clubs, wants to fulfill a childhood dream of playing in the English top flight. David has slowed down his progression a little this season with eight goals in 21 matches but he was excellent in the three campaigns preceding.

David scored a combined 52 goals in 112 Ligue 1 appearances throughout the 2020/21, 2021/22 and 2022/23 terms. Coupe de France has been his favourite competition this season as he has notched an impressive three goals and four assists in just three fixtures.

Villa have been long-term admirers of the 24-year-old striker and there's now been some movement, it's claimed. Football Transfers reports Villa have spoken to Lille to register their interest, while Brentford, Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United have done the same.

The Bees are particularly keen as they are expected to lose star forward Ivan Toney in the summer transfer window. Thomas Frank is said to have handpicked David, who is known for his lightning pace and clinical finishing, as the 27-year-old's ideal replacement.

Villa would have to do some convincing in that case as David's minutes would be hampered by Ollie Watkins.
