Chelsea are reportedly offering a contract to a midfielder wanted by Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues are said to be pondering whether to offer renewed and improved terms to England international Conor Gallagher to fend off interest from fellow Premier League clubs.

It’s a big decision to weigh up as Gallagher is a key player but Chelsea need to raise funds to conform with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR). Gallagher being an academy product means any sale would be pure profit in the eyes of the English top flight law.

The Guardian reports Chelsea, who were initially keen to sell Gallagher to raise around £50 million, are now considering shifting their stance by offering the midfielder a new contract. Aston Villa have already held informal talks with Enzo Maresca’s side, while London rivals Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest.

If Chelsea do decide to sell Gallagher, some patience may be required. Villa are also struggling with PSR so sales are needed to gain the necessary budget, while Tottenham are said to be considering their options before committing to big-money deals.

Gallagher has already made transfer preference clear

The player himself has conveyed his desire to remain at Stamford Bridge as he’s eager to help his boyhood club return to the top of the Premier League pile. It’s a tricky mission with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool all in very strong positions but Gallagher wants to be part of an effort nonetheless.

“Myself and everyone at Chelsea are excited and happy to work with Enzo Maresca,” Gallagher told Sky Sports. “We want to get Chelsea back to where they belong!”
