'Flying in for medical' - Aston Villa watch on as £67m ex-striker finalises shock transfer

Jhon Duran is on the move already and Aston Villa could benefit.

Former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran is on the move, merely six months after his mega, record-breaking £67 million departure.

Al-Nassr have decided to let Duran leave on loan, with Fenerbahce agreeing a deal to cover the striker’s full salary for the 2025/26 season. Transfer news journalist Fabrizio Romano reports the deal is now done after Duran flew to Istanbul with his agent to undergo his medical and complete the formalities.

Villa will be watching on with great interest as it was a big decision to let Duran leave in the first place but it now feels like superb business. Al-Nassr originally saw the Colombia international as a star of the here and now as well as the future to change the global perception of the Saudi Pro League, turning the attention to young talent.

All of that seems to have gone out of the window now, however, as Al-Nassr have extended 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s incredibly lucrative contract and decided to let Duran go. It awaits to be seen if Fenerbahce will sign the striker permanently after his loan but Villa will be intrigued as to how the situation unravels as they hold a sell-on clause.

Duran was in decent form before Al-Nassr departure

The context behind Duran’s departure must be complicated as it surely won’t be down to his form. The 21-year-old, still a raw talent and in need of proper man-management to reach his full potential, scored 12 goals in 18 matches for Al-Nassr during the second half of the 2024/25 season, including five in his last five appearances.

Al-Nassr’s third-placed finish in the Saudi Pro League behind Al-Ittihad and Al-Hilal will have frustrated all involved but it wasn’t down to Duran that they failed to finish closer to the top. Given he scored 12 goals in just 1,046 minutes for Villa between August and January, Duran should be more than capable of scoring goals for fun in Turkey.
