Aston Villa have reportedly learned of a snag in their bold transfer plan to sign Real Madrid superstar Marco Asensio as Paris Saint-Germain are now pushing for a deal.

The French giants are said to be trying to convince Asensio’s agent, Jorge Mendes, that the move to Paris is the right one.

The winger said goodbye to his Madrid teammates on Wednesday ahead of leaving the Santiago Bernabéu and interest has - rather understandably - ramped up ever since it became apparent he would not extend his stay.

Villa have been perhaps the most heavily linked but others are waiting in the wings. PSG are one of these clubs and they’ve stepped up from merely pondering to actively pursuing Asensio.

Transfer news journalist Fabrizio Romano claims there are “no changes” to the 27-year-old’s plans as “he will leave Real Madrid” but there’s “no green light to Aston Villa’s proposal” because “PSG are pushing”.

Asensio has twice been offered new proposals from Los Blancos but his decision is clear – he will depart.

Where he will end up remains to be seen but he will no doubt be a coup on a free transfer, having scored nine goals and assisted six in 30 La Liga appearances throughout 2022-23.

Meanwhile, Wolves ‘eye’ Liverpool loan

In other West Midlands transfer news, Villa’s local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers are said to be one of two Premier League clubs eager to sign Liverpool winger Fabio Carvalho on loan.

The former Fulham man has struggled for consistent game time at Anfield and a temporary move away looks on.

Ben Jacob, via Caught Offside, claims Wolves have joined Villa as a second team monitoring Carvalho’s situation.

The journalist said: “Liverpool don’t want to sell but may be open to a loan deal. There are Premier League clubs who admire Carvalho, including Villa and Wolves.”

Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig are said to have had an offer rejected for a permanent transfer but a season-long move won’t be ruled out.

Carvalho, 20, made just 13 appearances in the Premier League during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring two goals in the process.
