Hollywood film star Tom Hanks has made a surprise visit to Villa Park this afteroon (18 February) to watch Aston Villa’s game against Arsenal.

The two time Oscar-winner revealed in 2008 that he supports Villa and it’s believed this is his first visit to Villa Park. The Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan actor was even spotted talking to the officials on the side of the pitch before kick-off.

Villa also posted a series of photographs on the club’s twitter page, which show Hanks meeting midfielders John McGinn, Jacob Ramsey, Philippe Coutinho and full-back Matty Cash.

In the post, the club said: “It’s a pleasure to have you with us at Villa Park!”. And many fans were delighted that the Hollywood legend was at the stadium to support Unai Emery’s side.

Responding to the tweet, one fan wrote: “Come on Villa give Tom Hanks a good performance!” Another wrote: “Love Tom Hanks.” One fan said: “Brilliant, legend.”

Former Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor tweeted: “Iconic! Tom Hanks and also the future king support the European Cup winners Aston Villa! Love my club.”

Villa have some very famous supporters, including Prince William of course, although Hanks may be their most famous fan.

Since 1984, Hanks has been a fan of the Villa. He previously revealed that the name of the club is the key reason for supporting the West Midlands side.

Revealing he had listened to football scores being read out on television, speaking to James Cordon during a chat show, he said: “I said, ‘Aston Villa - what a lovely vacation spot?’”

“It turns out it’s in Birmingham - there’s nothing wrong with that? It’s not a town for the lighthearted. I’m a dedicated Aston Villa fan. I’ve seen them play once in the United States - a friendly against Portland.”
