Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has emphatically said that he is ‘not after a centre-forward’ this month despite the endless rumours linking Luis Suarez with a move to Villa Park.

The boss all but quashed rumours of a potential reunion with his former teammate adding that it was just a case of people trying to put two and two together and in this instance, coming out with five.

“We’re not after a centre-forward in this window, that’s as clear as I can be,” he said.

“I think during these windows everyone puts two and two together and a lot of names are bandied around and stuff but I obviously know Luis extremely well.

“He’s top class and has been a world class footballer throughout his career so I understand the links but we’re not after a centre-forward, whether it be Luis or anybody else in this window.”

So, you’re saying there’s a chance?

In all seriousness this may come as a blow to many Villans but one positive to take from the whole saga - regardless of whether there was anything in the rumour, is the names being brought up as potential targets since Gerrard arrived.

With Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho already through the door and a player like Suarez now being linked - that makes an emphatic statement of a club on the up.

Gerrard reinforced his desire to bring in a centre-back before the window closes on the 31st January and will be working hard to bring another big name to Villa Park over the course of the next week or so.
