'Question Villa’s defending’ - Roy Keane reacts to Aston Villa loss to Tottenham Hotspur
Aston Villa have been beaten in the Premier League this weekend
Ex-Aston Villa coach Roy Keane has questioned his former side’s defending in the second-half against Tottenham Hotspur. Unai Emery’s men lost 4-1 in the end at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
They led 1-0 at half-time in London after Morgan Rogers opened the scoring. However, they conceded four times after the break and left with nothing.
Brennan Johnson scored Spurs’ equaliser shortly after the interval. Striker Dominic Solanke then struck twice for the hosts before James Maddison added their fourth in stoppage time.
‘We can question Villa’s defending’...
Sky Sports pundit Keane, who worked at Aston Villa as part of their backroom staff back in 2014, had this to say: “It was a brilliant reaction from Spurs. They needed to score early in the second-half. The delivery (from Son) was just absolutely fantastic, we can question Villa’s defending, once Son gets it someone has got to get tighter because we know his quality.
“Johnson just drifts in at the back like all good wide players do. The delivery was absolutely fantastic and almost impossible to defend once it leaves his foot. It was a brilliant goal. It was a great reaction from Spurs, I have to say, they played some beatiful football.”
Frank Lampard was also in the studio and added: “Sometimes you’re at your weakest when you’re trying to counter. Aston Villa weren’t that organised when they were trying to counter attack. Tottenham are good at playing vertical, quick combinations through the middle of the pitch. It was really hard to deal with.”
Meanwhile, former Spurs man Jamie Redknapp said: “They (Spurs) were good at this (pressing Aston Villa) and all of a sudden Aston Villa’s defence was all over the place. Solanke got his rewards, he gets in the box. Get into that six yard box and you’re going to get goals. He hasn’t scored of late but that was a big one today. Second half they were just so much better, so much more aggressive. They were a joy to watch.”
Aston Villa looked organised in the first 45 minutes and looked on their way to picking up another impressive result. However, Spurs fought back and Emery’s side couldn’t deal with them.
The Midlands outfit remain sat in 5th place in the Premier League table with 18 points on the board and are only outside the top four on goal difference. They are back in action in the Champions League on Wednesday night with an away trip to Club Brugge as they look to bounce back.
