Aston Villa are set to reignite their interest in a defender wanted by Premier League rivals Leicester City.

The Villans are reportedly lining up a move for Rennes star Adrien Truffert following a failed attempt £17 million attempt to sign the left-back in January.

Unai Emery could be set to lose one of his current left-sided defensive options as Alex Moreno is being heavily linked with a £13 million return to Real Betis. Villa, always a step ahead with their transfer dealings, are likely to respond quickly if Moreno does indeed exit the club.

French outlet L’Equipe reports Villa are preparing a “significant offer” to sign Truffert this summer. The 22-year-old, who was recently named in Thierry Henry’s squad for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, is a target for the likes of Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Monaco and Marseille.

Villa are also set to face competition from an array of direct Premier League rivals. The report from L’Equipe lists Leicester, Fulham and AFC Bournemouth as potential suitors if Truffert decides he wants to move to the English top tier.

The two-time France Under-23 international has just two years remaining on his current contract, meaning any significant bids are likely to be considered. Rennes were more reluctant to sell their star when Villa made their approach as it was mid-season.

Truffert could be a good fit for Villa

Consistently a starter for Rennes since the start of the 2020/21 season, Truffert has already racked up 156 senior appearances. The defender, who can also play as a left midfielder if needed, has scored six goals and contributed 21 assists in that period.

Truffert’s attacking-mindedness and versatility certainly match what Villa are seeking. Unai Emery prefers utilising his left-back rather than his right-back as the one to dart forward and join attacks. The head coach also appreciates a player with strong work rates at both ends of the field.
