Newcastle United have made a shock approach to Aston Villa for midfielder Jacob Ramsey, according to a reputable report.

The Magpies are keen on bolstering their midfield and see the 22-year-old, who has also gained interest from clubs abroad, as a top target. Ramsey has spent much of this season troubled by injury and as a result hasn’t fully gotten up to speed again, but he managed six goals and seven assists in 35 Premier League appearances last term.

The Athletic reports Newcastle have made an official approach for Ramsey but are aware the funds may not be available as of yet. It’s said the Magpies will only be able to go ahead with a bid if sales are made. That makes a January move unlikely, then, but it could be a different story in the summer.

It’s also claimed Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich have made their interest known to Villa. Unai Emery and Monchi have a big decision to make if any offer does come in as sales are needed to remain compliant with profit and sustainability rules. It's assured, however, that there are other ways for the money to be found.

Meanwhile, movement on Morgan Rogers deal

In other transfer news, the Villans have made a third and improved bid to Middlesbrough to sign attacking midfielder Morgan Rogers. The offer is worth around £15 million including add-ons and Villa are keen to get the transfer completed early this week, with no late pressure on Deadline Day.

The 21-year-old, who can play anywhere across the front three, is known for his impressive dribbling and pace. Formerly of West Bromwich Albion's youth academy before moving to Manchester City in 2021, Rogers was signed by Boro in July 2023 following loan spells at Blackpool, AFC Bournemouth and Lincoln City.
