Aston Villa, aiming to sign a player themselves, could have a big say in the future of Jarrad Branthwaite at Everton amid Manchester United interest.

Unai Emery’s side have reportedly lodged an official enquiry to Everton for midfielder Amadou Onana and it could have repercussions for Man Utd and their hopes of signing Branthwaite.

Villa are keen to add midfield depth this summer while utilising various workarounds to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR). Douglas Luiz appears to be on his way to Juventus with Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling Junior set to move in the other direction, while Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher is under serious consideration.

A lack of funds makes big-money signings very tricky but Villa could explore using instalments over several future seasons. It’s a complex method that can cause future restrictions but it’s one Chelsea have pursued in recent years to meet PSR requirements, so it’s a route to consider.

The Times reports Villa have contacted Everton about the possibility of signing Onana, adding another option to the midfield shortlist. It’s claimed the Toffees are demanding £50 million for the Belgium international as they seek to gain significant funds – also to alleviate PSR concerns.

Man Utd, meanwhile, have had an initial £43 million offer for Branthwaite rejected. Ten Hag wants to bolster his options in central defence following the exit of Raphaël Varane. Branthwaite, who played 35 times for Sean Dyche’s side in the Premier League last term, heads the shortlist.

Villa hold the chess pieces in Onana and Branthwaite sagas

Everton are said to be far more willing to let Onana depart than they are Branthwaite. There’s a direct correlation between the two deals as the Toffees simply won’t let Branthwaite go if Onana leaves; there would be no need to sell as the funds will already have been gained from the pockets of Villa.

United could still try to tempt Everton with a huge bid but their initial offer, well below the reported £70 million valuation, indicates a reluctance to go above and beyond.
